Galanthus nivalis, or single snowdrops in the green are beautiful, elegant, scented white tear-drop shaped blooms and are the first brave flowers to bloom as winter breaks in to spring.

Planting and growing snowdrops “in the green” helps the plant to establish more reliably than their dry bulb counterparts in the autumn. The bulbs are harvested in Jan-March whilst they still have green leaf and are in active growth, the snowdrop flower  faded. They are shipped with roots and shoots and must be replanted quickly so they can settle in vigorously.

The are often seen alongside winter aconite, in dappled shade beneath a deciduous tree and will flourish at woodland edges, hedges and verges, river and stream banks as well as open damp pastures, meadows and orchards in sun or partial shade. They will start to subdivide and multiply and are ideal for naturalising in drifts through lawns and forest floors. Snowdrops in the green can be planted in all soil types but will thrive in moist soil.

A brilliant first bulb supporting early foraging insects and pollinators in search of their first hit of nectar in the late winter and early spring.

The delicate snowdrop flower are dear in small vases and will also perform brilliantly in planters before other spring bulb varieties start to emerge.

PLEASE NOTE: BULBS ARE HARVESTED ON ORDER AND WILL BE SHIPPED IN LATE  FEBRUARY AND MARCH.

Planting Tips:

  • Plant your snowdrops in the green as soon as possible; if you can't do it straightaway, sprinkle them with a little water to keep them moist.
  • Choose a semi-shaded spot that doesn't dry out in summer – under a deciduous tree is ideal.
  • Enrich the soil a little if needed, by adding some leaf mould or homemade compost.
  • The snowdrops come in a bundle – separate them out into their separate bulbs and stems.
  • Plant each snowdrop individually, at the same depth as it was growing before – the white part of the stem should be underground. Space each bulb at least 10cm apart, in a natural and irregular manner using a small bulb dibber or copper trowel.
  • Once clumps are established in a few years, you can then lift and divide them after flowering and transplant them around the garden.
